We gain a better appreciation of the utopian vision of Yeurashalayim in Yechezkel and Mishnayot Tamid and Middot against the historical backdrop of the utopian vision of Yerushalayim of numerous sectarian groups during Bayit Sheini. These problematic groups not only criticized the Yerusahalyim of their day; they preached abandoning Yerushalayim, going as far as to pray for its demise. Chazal disagreed with some of these groups quite strenuously, others less strenuously. But what they CONSISTENTLY rejected was their very attitude toward dispute, unrealized ideals, and imperfection in this world. Chazal recognized that an imperfect Yerushalayim was not to be abandoned; it was to be assessed realistically and improved lovingly.
